UC Santa Barbara Game Summary

Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB led 10-6 at halftime against visiting UCLA and then won the second half 7-5 for a final 17-11 margin to upset the 5th ranked Bruins. The 6th ranked Gauchos scored 16 seconds into the game when senior Jordan Venetis (Thousand Oaks, CA) assisted junior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) in early offense off the draw. It was off to the races for UCSB to get to the 4 goal halftime lead. The Gauchos scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 12-6 lead and led by 6 goals again later for the entire middle ten minutes of the second half. UCLA pulled to within 5 goals with about 5 minutes remaining in the game on an unassisted goal by senior Morgan Oberstein (San Diego, CA) that made it 16-11 in favor of UCSB. It was the closest the Bruins could get. The Gauchos scored their last goal with 1:43 left in the game when junior defender Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) went coast to coast on a clear by senior goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) and then buried an unassisted goal. After that UCSB stalled out for most of the remainder of the game. UCLA did get two shots off after breaking the UCSB stall with senior goalie Devon Comito (Glen Head, NY) double teaming immediately but in the closing 10 seconds her counterpart Centner turned away two point blank shots to get the win. UCSB improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in WWLL Central. UCLA dropped to 8-2 overall and 2-1 WWLL Central.
