UCLA and Cal State San Marcos have received the top seeds for the upcoming WWLL Championships being hosted by UC Santa Cruz April 12th & 13th. Selection Sunday for the WWLL saw some expected bids and easy seeding decisions but also consternation from selection committee members regarding too few results among the teams under consideration in the 18 team WWLL D2.
Selection work is done, though, and the Bruins and the Cougars take aim at repeating as champions in WWLL D1 and WWLL D2, respectively. UCLA finished the regular season a perfect 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the tough WWLL D1 South region. That region features three nationally ranked programs with Arizona State and San Diego State both in the national top fifteen. The Bruins were top ranked in the WCLA all season but mysteriously dropped to second ranked last week, even though they hadn't lost while in that #1 spot. Rounding out the six team bracket for WWLL D1 are UCSB, Cal Poly SLO (also ranked nationally) and Grand Canyon University.
Cal State San Marcos is 10-0 overall and 5-0 in WWLL South D2. The Cougars are the WWLL D2 championship tournament top seed and #1 ranked in the WCLA going into the post-season. Their two closest games all year came from Fullerton College and Concordia University, who are also selected for the WWLL D2 field. Fullerton, a 3C2A two-year institution has put together their best season since program inception in 2019. The Hornets won WWLL Central D2 with a 5-0 record and are 8-2 overall. Concordia gets the #3 seed with a 10-3 record. UCSD is a hair ahead of them in the seeds at the #2 spot. Cal Poly B and host UC Santa Cruz round out the field.
The D2 selection committee voiced that not enough D2 play-off consideration teams played teams from other regions that were also in consideration to make selection and seeding cut and dry. Teams in D2 played a wide range of number of games with some playing as few as 8 games all season but other teams playing as many as 12 games. Ultimately, it took seven wins to be considered for selection in D2 but not every seven win team got into the final six. Then when those six were grouped together there were too few head to head results among those teams. This will all make the D2 play-off game results even more interesting.
