Cal State San Marcos Repeats As WWLL D2 Champions

Phoenix, AZ - Cal State San Marcos repeated as WWLL Division 2 champions with a 14-8 win over the cinderella story University of San Diego team to get their second straight WWLL championship. The 7th seeded Toreros were spinning as a cinderella with their 10-9 upset of second seeded Cal Poly B in their quarterfinal and their 14-10 upset of third seeded Concordia of Irvine in the semifinals on Saturday.

While the Toreros were the story of the day on Saturday in D2 of the WWLL Tournament hosted by Grand Canyon University it were the Cougars as the team of the day on Sunday. In 2023 Cal State San Marcos were 19-1 winners over 3rd seeded UC Santa Cruz for that past title but had to do more work to get by cross-town rival University of San Diego.  In the first half the Cougars led 6-1 and then won the second half 8-7 for the 14-8 final result.

Cal State San Marcos receives the WWLL D2 automatic qualifier berth in the WCLA National Tournament. That national championship event is May 7 - 10, 2024 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. Six other WWLL D2 teams ranked in the WCLA Top 20 Poll will wait for word about at-large invitations.
