Phoenix, AZ - UCLA held off the club from ASU in a nail biter to win 10-9 and win the WWLL D1 Championship. The Sun Devils mounted a furious fourth quarter rally to pull within a goal with 2:02 left in the game but could not get the equalizer and force the overtime. UCLA survived.
The Bruins led 8-3 at halftime and 10-4 going into the fourth quarter but every shot they took for the rest of the game was stopped by ASU senior goalie Alex Labrosse (Amherst, NH). Labrosse was 100% on saves in the final period and the Sun Devils outscored UCLA 5-0 in that quarter fueled by her saves. The Bruins got to the championship game with an 18-3 win over the club from UC Davis and a 15-4 win over the club from UC Berkeley. ASU advanced with a 20-10 win over Cal Poly and an 11-6 win over Grand Canyon.
The championship for UCLA is their fifth all-time in the WWLL. The Bruins have won it in 2003, 2014, 2016, 2019 and now in 2024. The championship count is catching the UCSB total of six from championships in 1991, 1992, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2012,
With the win UCLA earned the WWLL D1 automatic qualifier berth in the WCLA National Tournament. That national championship event is May 7 - 10, 2024 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. ASU and San Diego State are two ranked WWLL D1 teams in the WCLA Top 20 Poll who will have to wait for word about at-large invitations.
