Cal State San Marcos Snags Third At WCLA Nationals

As a program Cal State San Marcos has continued to improve over the last few years and has progressed towards consistently competing against top ranked teams. The Cougars have had some talented players join their club who contribute to pushing their teammates to a higher level. From Coach Jillian Dohrman, "Our club has been lucky to always have women who love lacrosse and who want to grow the game and their teammates on and off the field, and that is really special to have."

In the final game of the WCLA National Tournament for both teams Cal State San Marcos played Boise State in a fight for third place. The Cougars were 0-2 against the Broncos for the past two years at Nationals but came out on top in this one. Cal State San Marcos were down 0-4 at the end of 1st quarter and then 0-5 in the first few minutes of the second quarter. With a few adjustments on offense and a fire lit by the defense the Cougars outscored Boise State 10-1 through the rest of the second and third quarters. By the start of the 4th quarter they led 10-6 and then held on for a 13-11 victory.

Cal State San Maros junior attacker Angela Chantaca was named winner of the Amtahcha Award as the national player of the year in WCLA Division 2 and also Attacker of the Year for the WCLA. Sophomore goalie Cierraleone Warfield was named Goalie of the Year, and coach Jillian Dohrmann, was named Coach of the Year for WCLA D2.  The Cougars also won the Sportsmanship Award from among all the teams at the WCLA National Tournament.
